Appliance City

Posted by James. on

Every business has a culture and that culture emanates from it's founder and the guy or girl in charge.

The word "culture" comes to us from early Latin and means to cultivate. It means to cultivate the spirit, the minds and ideals of a group. To "cultivate" means to expand and to grow in quality and quantity.

So the question begs, what culture has Mike Usselman, the longtime and current owner of Appliance City Portland cultivated.

Which brings us right back to Batman. We all know Batman very well. He's the good guy. But what are the qualities of Batman. Kindness, compassion, strength, justness, honesty. An ethical and moral obligation. An ability to do the right thing.

In the last couple of months I've had the privilege to get to hang out with the Appliance City crew and Mike. I made a very interesting discovery for myself. The Batman qualities are alive and well and actually woven into the very fabric of the people and the business at Appliance City.

You see it's not odd to find Mike and his family of a weekend helping out the homeless in downtown Portland. It's not odd to find them helping lots of people actually.

Mike and his family and crew have the ability to help people. Not for personal gain, but just to help. If there were no other reason, Appliance City would have my support for that alone.

So the moral of the story is, always be Batman and it will be a better day for us all.
